Accessibility statement

This covers the BALAY website. The app has its own statement.

What we are aiming for

WCAG 2.2 at level AA. We are not claiming to have reached it, because the full manual review is not finished. This page says what has been done and what has not.

BALAY exists for people with ADHD, and plenty of them have other things going on as well. Getting this right matters more here than it would on most sites.

What is built in

• Every interactive thing is at least 44 by 44 pixels, with space between neighbours.
• Everything works by keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus ring at every stop. A skip-to-content link is the first thing you reach.
• Colour is never the only signal. States carry a label, an icon or a shape as well.
• Body text is 16 pixels on mobile and 17 on desktop, left aligned, never justified, with the line length capped so it stays easy to track.
• Light and dark are both designed rather than one being an inversion of the other. Dark backgrounds shift towards midnight blue instead of black, which reduces the bleed that white-on-black causes.
• Reduced motion is honoured. Nothing moves, and nothing goes missing because it did not move.
• Reduced transparency is honoured. The glass surfaces become solid.
• Increased contrast is honoured. Borders firm up and surfaces become more opaque.
• Nothing autoplays, nothing advances on a timer, and there are no time limits anywhere.
• Nothing important is hidden behind a hover.
• Pages use real landmarks and headings, one main heading each, and declare their language.

What is not done

• The full manual review is outstanding: both colour modes checked at length on a real screen, a keyboard-only pass over every page, text zoomed to 200 per cent, and testing at the narrowest and widest sizes.
• The site has not been tested with a screen reader by someone who uses one daily. Automated checks are not a substitute for that.
• Sumi, the character on the homepage and in the corner, is drawn on a canvas. Sumi is marked so screen readers skip it, and every state it can show is written alongside as text, so nothing is available only by looking at it.

Known limits

The app screenshots are pictures of the app. Their descriptions say what each screen shows, but a picture of an interface is never as good as the interface.

The contact and waitlist links open your own email app. If your device has no email app set up they do nothing, so both places also show the address as text you can copy.

We read everything that comes in, and we'll come back to you. If something is broken we would rather hear it plainly than not hear it.
